Ninth Grade Admissions

All current 8th grade students whose primary residence is in Delaware may apply for 9th grade. The admissions process begins in 8th grade.  Our maximum enrollment is 970 students and our freshmen class size is determined by the difference between 970 and the number of returning students for grades 10 through 12.

NEW for School Year 2023-2024

  • Senate Substitute 1 for Senate Bill 82 of the 151st General Assembly was signed in October 2021 for online registration.
    • Requires uniform statewide online registration system beginning for the 2023-2024 school year.
    • Requires all first time registering students to be registered in their district of residence before attending choice or charter school.
  • Step 1 – Register student in the school of residence – A school of residence is the school a student attends based on home address. See the school locator map for a list of schools by address.

The following information is required for an application to The Charter School of Wilmington.

  • 2023-2024 School Year Application The School Choice Application for the 2023-2024 School Year closes on January 11, 2023. (Please pick “OTHER” for your current district if your student currently attends a private school.)

We highly recommend that all applicants provide the following supplemental items since they are required in order for us to determine preference eligibility. Materials should be dropped off at the School’s Main Office or mailed to us via United States Postal Service (USPS) by January 14, 2023.  We do not accept faxes or PDF documents by email due to readability issues. As a component of specific-interest in CSW, applicants will be evaluated for their foundation in Math and Reading using the TerraNova™  assessment. The results of this assessment may also be used for academic phase placement of enrolled students along with other phase-assessment processes.  An email will be sent a few days before the assessment with reminders and instructions.

  1. Students applying for the 2023-2024 school year should submit the following supplemental documents in addition to taking our Admissions Assessment on either December 10, 2022 or January 14, 2023. All documents are due to CSW by January 14, 2023. All documents need to be dropped off at the School’s Main Office or mailed via USPS.  NO emails or faxes.
    • An essay (to be completed during the assessment)
    • One (1) Recommendation form ( This form must be completed by a guidance counselor or science/math teacher ONLY. You may send one or two forms. (All recommendations must be mailed to CSW in an envelope sealed by the counselor/teacher.)
    • A copy of the final 7th grade report card
    • A copy of the first marking period 8th grade report card


You will receive an email update from us in December and January advising you if your application is complete or if supplemental materials are missing.

Historically,  we have had more applicants than seats available.  When this happens, we use a lottery to offer seats while giving priority to applicants who are eligible for the defined preferences outlined in our Admissions Policy. Please review the Admissions Policy on our website for information about our specific-interest rubric and how we apply the preferences.

Important Dates:

  • Open House: November 10, 2022  5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Assessment Dates: December 10, 2022 or January 14, 2023  Our assessments will be held Saturday, December 10, 2022, OR January 14, 2023.  You may choose the 8 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. timeslot or the 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. timeslot. Our TerraNova™ assessment is a 2½-hour online assessment focusing on Math and Reading foundation. No calculators are permitted. An email reminder will be sent one day prior to the assessment.
  • Dates for Freshmen Registration and Placement Tests in 2023 will be determined in January 2023.

Assessment Day Details:

  • Applicants may only take one assessment.
  • 6th or 7th graders may not participate in the assessment.
  • Once you apply online, you will receive a follow-up email to register for an assessment option that fits your needs and schedule. Assessment day details will also be included.


Applicants with IEPs or Section 504 Accommodation Plans

The Charter School of Wilmington (CSW) commits to support each enrolled student with an IEP (Individualized Education Program) or Section 504 accommodation plan as needed.  CSW does not need to know of an applicant’s IEP or 504 requirements until after acceptance; however, if an applicant requires accommodations for participation in our Assessment and written essay, please contact the school at least one week in advance of the applicant’s Assessment date to allow for adequate preparation time.
